Bar Association - Admission

Fully qualified lawyers, who want to work as lawyers have to be admitted to the Bar Association. Together with the admission, you accept the membership in the Bar Association.

Responsible department

the Bar Association in whose district you would like to get admission



  • qualification to hold judicial office or
  • meeting the requirements on integration in accordance with the law regulating the activity of European lawyers in Germany or
  • passing the corresponding qualifying examination


The application for admission to the bar has to be submitted to the responsible authority. It has to be signed by hand or have a qualified electronic signature.

Note: The Tübingen Bar Association generally only accepts applications for admission to the bar in writing, not electronically.

You can get the form either from the relevant authority or you can download it from the website of the Bar Association.

If nothing gets in the way of your admission, you will receive an appointment for the swearing-in ceremony. After the swearing-in ceremony, you will be handed over a certificate for the admission. You will be registered in the Bar Association register.

Required documents

  • completed application form
  • Officially authenticated certification of second state examination (zweites Staatsexamen) or confirmation that the candidate has passed the qualifying examination
  • CV with current passport photograph
  • proof of professional indemnity insurance
  • if applicable:
    • documents on your work as a corporate lawyer
    • confirmation from the legal firm
    • certificates to prove your academic degrees and titles
    • the form "Antrag auf Ausstellung des Berufsattributs Rechtsanwalt" (Application to certify the profession as a lawyer)


Depending on the Bar Association, an administrative fee is charged for the admission.

The lawyer is obliged to pay the annual subscription to the association as a member of the Bar Association. The subscription is specified by the relevant association assembly.
